Isometric Basics

Open movie night: what Blender films teach about depth

Camera angles from open movies, and what they mean for flat art.

The best way to learn isometric CSS is to rebuild something you see every day. A mug, a keyboard key or a stack of books all make good first projects. They are simple enough to finish in an evening, and each one teaches a different trick, from rounded tops to repeating elements.

Clip: Sintel, (c) Blender Foundation, CC BY 3.0. Keyboard: Space play or pause, skip 5 seconds, M mute, F full screen.

Choosing the three face colours

Hover effects on isometric blocks work best when they follow the same rules as the static scene. Lift a block along its vertical axis, deepen its shadow on the floor, and leave the other blocks alone. Moving a block sideways, or changing its angle, breaks the projection and makes the scene feel unstable.

Great write-up. Would love a follow-up on doing the same thing with SVG.

Fixed now, thanks for spotting it.

Our designer drew the scene in Figma and I rebuilt it with your approach in an afternoon.

Has anyone tried this with container queries? Feels like a good fit.

Good question. Usually that means something is flattening the 3D context; check for overflow hidden on a parent.

Bookmarked. The table alone is worth it.

How would you handle text that needs to wrap on one of the faces?

The paper cube exercise sounds fun. Are the templates available somewhere?

Short and useful. More quick tips like this, please.

I tried this on an old iPad and one of the faces flickers on hover. Any idea why?

Glad it helped. The values are in the colour ratios reference.

Yes, container queries work well; we will cover them soon.
